Safety in the Middle

Middle management can be hard at times – being in between your subordinates and upper management can feel like you’re caught between a rock and a hard place.

An important experience at all levels of an organization is feeling safe. I’ve posted before - in a healthy organization culture, people need to feel safe.

What if your team doesn’t feel particularly safe with your superiors? What do you do about that?

Who defines what ‘safe’ looks and feels like? If is comes from only within yourself, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Your role as mid-management is to understand what conditions need to be in place for your team. If you assume, you’ll be basing it on what YOU need to feel safe. That plays a part in this, but you’ll need to ask your team. The goal is to define what safety success would look like to your team.
