Leader Mindset - Part 3
So far, we’ve talked about The Four Cs and Sticking to the Task. Today, let’s talk about Integrity.
Integrity – which you likely already know – is adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. In other words, you do the right thing. This is particularly important when challenges arise or when you, as the leader, are being challenged.
Agility is important. Being able to read the climate and where we’re heading and how to position your company are great skills. Doing it with knowledge, strategy, mindfully, and finesse is one way. Mowing folks down in your path is another. When people look at you when you’re ahead, which would you prefer they think – 1. Wow, what a great leader or 2. Wow, what an ass. What if in the future, you need the person or company that thinks the latter? Burned bridges laying at your feet just means you’re standing in ash – leaving dirty footprints wherever you go. Not many invite dirty footprints into their space.
Then there’s being challenged as a leader – by a member of your staff. It may be easier to brush it off, ignore it, hope it goes away or the flip side - reprimand or fire the person….. Challenges to you as a leader are hard. However, sometimes the person challenging may have a good point but delivering it by mowing you down. It’s especially difficult if the mowing happens in a public arena. This is where The Four Cs come in real handy, keeps you grounded. Recall – leaders mentor staff to succeed. That includes tough ones. Listen, be open, and understand their point. Others are watching. If a good and fair point is made, great. Thank them and provide some coaching on a better delivery method. Modeling and mentoring your staff on the Four Cs help each of you to succeed.
