How Does Joy Matter at Work?

Last week I posted about a lovely director I worked with struggling with a mind trap. One of her presenting issues was a lack of joy at work. She knew it mattered for herself and for her staff, but it was eluding her, and she was concerned it was eluding her staff. Once her confidence and conviction strengthened, she moved onto joy for herself and her staff with great success.

How does joy matter? Let’s look at a sports analogy. When a football team scores a touchdown, what do they do? They celebrate! They dance, they pose as a team for the cameras, they hug or pat all the players involved, they jump in the fans’ arms…. Unfiltered joy AND recognition. You’ve seen it and if it’s your team that scored, you celebrate right along with them. I raise my arms and scream “TOUCHDOWN” myself. Sheer joy.

A team works in harmony with each other to accomplish their task. Harmony leads to the greatest impact. The impact leads to success. Success is blatantly acknowledged and celebrated. Sheer joy.

In the last paragraph, am I talking about a sports team or business team?

Let’s discuss.
