Four Key Leadership Styles

The four key leadership styles to draw from are:

  1. Directive (Autocratic)
Best for: Emergencies, inexperienced teams, or high-risk tasks.
Action: Set clear instructions, closely supervise.
Example: A leader steps in firmly when a project is off track and a deadline is near.

  2. Coaching
Best for: Developing individuals, building long-term capacity.
Action: Offer guidance, ask questions, provide feedback.
Example: A leader helps a junior employee grow by offering structured feedback and stretch opportunities.

  3. Supportive (Democratic/Participative)
Best for: When buy-in and collaboration are needed.
Action: Facilitate discussion, involve the team in decision-making.
Example: A team works together to brainstorm a new product direction.

  4. Delegative (Laissez-Faire)
Best for: Highly skilled, autonomous teams.
Action: Step back and let them lead; be available for support.
Example: A leader lets an experienced developer run a subproject solo.

How do I choose the best style? I’ll write about that next week.
